Fall and Winter are wonderful times of the year. Especially here in Orange County with our temperate climate and warm(ish) autumn days. But like other places, as our temperatures drop and holiday lights go up, we know its the start of cold and flu season. It’s important to maintain good habits and health year-round, but cold weather and the holidays come with their own stressors and health risks. Newport Medical and Wellness Center has some tips to keep you on the right track.

Getting Sick

We all dread catching a cold or flu. Luckily, there are many steps you can take to keep germs at bay.

  • A flu shot is the best protection from the virus. There’s even a nasal spray for those with a needle aversion. Call us to schedule your flu shot today: 949-631-9009.
  • Wash your hands. It’s good practice to wash hands after returning home from public places and before eating, and after contact with sick people or high-traffic surfaces.
  • Cover your cough. If you need to cough or sneeze, it’s best to do so into your elbow or a tissue instead of your hands.
  • Get your vitamins. While the efficacy of consuming vitamin supplements is up for debate, some people find them to be helpful. Talk to your doctor to ensure that you’re not taking any vitamins that could interfere with other medications or treatments.
  • Get in to see the doctor. If you have been sick for 5 to 7 days and if you are getting worse despite resting, get in to see your doctor ASAP! Newport Medical and Wellness often have lots of same day appointments available so don’t hesitate to call if you are sick!

Boost Hydration and IV Therapy

With 75% of Americans being chronically dehydrated and not even knowing it no wonder we’re getting sick more often! IV vitamin therapy is the fastest & most effective method of introducing fluid, nutrients & health supplements throughout your entire body. During cold and flu season, we suggest a few of our special formulas to combat sickness and ward it off.

  • Cold and Flu Therapy. Fast acting natural IV vitamin infusion specially formulated to reduce cold and flu symptoms while replenishing fluids and essential nutrients so your body can heal itself.
  • Immune Boost. Boost’s Immune IV therapy is formulated with 11 ingredients to help pump up your immune system and protect your body from colds and other viral threats.
  • Vitamin C Boost. Our high-dose Vitamin C IV therapy is formulated to make your skin glow and give your immune system a super boost to fight colds, flu, stress and low energy.
  • Stress Relief. 12 essential nutrients directly into your bloodstream for maximum absorption to calm the body and eliminate moodiness, irritability and other signs of stress.

Exercise and Diet

With the cold weather and plentiful holiday meals, it’s easy to slack off on healthy habits. Try mixing it up with these alternatives:

  • Workout inside. There are countless DVDs, online videos and even phone apps to coach you through an in-home workout. You could also consider investing in a treadmill, or try something new, such as martial arts or yoga, that takes place inside a cozy studio. Gym memberships can also be quite affordable.
  • Everything in moderation. You don’t have to totally deprive yourself of the delicious holiday treats. Just try to keep things balanced with smaller helpings of less healthy items. You could even look up recipes for healthy versions of your favorite goodies.

Mental Health

Another common issue during the colder months is poor mental health. If you’re really struggling with your mood, it’s best to contact your doctor. You can also try:

  • Pep talk. Remind yourself that the cold, dark days won’t last forever. Try making plans with loved ones to take advantage of activities you can only do when it’s cold, like heading to the mountains to play in the snow.
  • Keep busy. It’s a great time to try a new hobby. Whatever it is that keeps you entertained, it’s sure to help the time pass more quickly.
  • Take care. Make plans with yourself. Use that time to do something that makes you feel good. Take a bubble bath, get your favorite takeout or cuddle up with a great book.
