What To Expect from Your Tattoo Removal

As the number of people with tattoos increases, so does the number of people who want to have their tats removed. A recent study indicated that as many as a quarter of people with tattoos are not happy with them. While not all of these people will get their tattoos professionally removed, the option is available for those who are interested. If you are thinking of using out tattoo removal service, here is what you can expect.

The Consultation

Tattoo removal is usually preceded by a short consultation with a laser technician. During this consultation, the technician will examine your tattoo and give you an estimate for how many sessions are needed and how much it will cost. These can vary depending on the age, size, and color of your tattoo. While your technician will do his or her best to give you an accurate estimate, keep in mind that removal may take more or less time than the initial estimate.

Before the Procedure

Before the procedure, you will be given a pair of protective goggles to protect your eyes from the laser. The technician will also test the laser on your skin to see which setting is most reactive with your tattoo. Some technicians are also authorized to administer a mild anesthetic or sedative if you are especially nervous about the removal, but the vast majority of people do not need these interventions.

During the Procedure

The technician applies the laser to your skin over the tattoo. The laser penetrates the top layers of skin, passing through the skin itself and reacting only with the ink. This causes the ink to fade, though it may not happen right away. Most tattoos require several sessions to remove, and some colors of ink may be much more difficult to remove. Most people experience some discomfort while having their tattoo removed, about equal to the pain of having the tattoo done in the first place.

After the Procedure

Apply ice to the area to prevent swelling and soothe the pain. You will also want to keep the area clean and apply a topical anesthetic to prevent infection. If you had a tattoo removed from a large area, consider bandaging it to keep it clean and dry and to avoid permanent scarring.

Get a fresh start by having your tattoos professionally removed. While removal can represent a significant investment of time and money, it may be well worth it to lose your outdated or embarrassing ink. Give us a call to schedule your consultation:(949) 631-9009.
