Understanding Preventative Care

Benjamin Franklin wrote, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” In applying this axiom to one’s health, taking steps to prevent health issues from arising is much easier, and potentially less costly, than addressing them when they are diagnosed too late and become more difficult to treat or cure. This is where preventative medicine comes in. Most health plans cover preventative care services under the Affordable Care Act and Newport Medical and Wellness Center highly recommends wellness and preventative care visits. It is important to understand what preventative care is and what it is not to avoid costs like deductibles or copays.

What Is Preventative Care

Preventative care is routine health services that are used to detect, prevent and delay diseases, illnesses and other health conditions. The following fall under this kind of care:

  • Healthy Lifestyle Choices: This includes making and maintaining healthy habits, such as eating balanced and nutritious meals. Also, doing routine or vigorous physical activity, which is helpful in reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
  • Regular Checkups: Seeing your doctor regularly allows for more opportunities to detect health issues. It is essential that children go to all of their well-check visits, typically recommended from birth to about age 21. There also guidelines based on age, gender and family history that determine when adults should get regular checkups.
  • Screenings: Medical tests allow doctors to check for health conditions before there are signs or symptoms, and when they may be easier to treat. Common screenings include the following: blood work, blood pressure, cholesterol, colorectal, mammograms, cervical cancer, vision/hearing, and mental health.
  • Immunizations: These are also referred to as vaccinations, which help to protect against certain diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides a list of recommended immunization schedules for children and adults.

What Is Not Preventative Care

Any medical treatments or ongoing care for existing health conditions are not considered preventative care. These types of services are usually referred to as diagnostic care. Diagnostic care can occur during a preventative care visit when a health concern is brought up that needs evaluation, treatment or management of health.

Making preventative care a part of your health plan is key to overall well-being and quality of life.
