With the world in upheaval over COVID-19, knowing how to recover quickly from illness is essential. While it’s important to wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your face whenever possible, you may not be able to avoid illnesses forever. If you do come down with a flu or other sickness, here are six things you can do to help your body recover as quickly as possible

Rest

When you’re sick with the flu, it’s not the time to train for an upcoming marathon or try to get a vigorous workout in each day. Instead, you should treat your body kindly and give it plenty of rest. Stay home from school or work so your body can heal and you can avoid spreading your germs to others. Most health professionals recommend that you avoid working out for two to five days if you have a fever.

Eat Healthy Foods

When you’re sick, you may want to curl up with a bag of potato chips or a plate of brownies and self-medicate with comfort foods. This is a bad idea, though. Keep in mind that your body is trying to fight off harmful invaders and it needs the right tools to be effective. Nutrient-dense foods such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains can give your immune system additional strength so it can fight off illness faster.

Stay Hydrated

Fever is a common symptom of the flu, and it can cause your body to sweat excessively. You may also have diarrhea or vomiting that further dehydrates your body. It’s important to replace lost fluids as quickly as possible. In addition to plain water, herbal teas and electrolyte drinks can help replenish your fluids. Avoid caffeinated sodas, since they can dehydrate your body even further.

If you still feel sluggish or deal with frequent headaches even after you’ve recovered from the flu, you may want to receive a vitamin IV hydration therapy from Newport Medical and Wellness Center. By delivering the liquids directly into your bloodstream, the hydrating effects are amplified.

Take Supplements

Some supplements, including Zinc and Elderberry supplements, may shorten the duration of the flu or common cold. For best results, take these supplements when you first begin to experience symptoms. They’re less effective if they aren’t taken right at the beginning of your illness.

Humidify the Air

If the air in your home is dry, it can exacerbate your symptoms. Invest in a quality humidifier or vaporizer to help loosen congestion and make it easier for you to breathe. If you’re having trouble sleeping due to congestion, lean over your cool-mist humidifier or steam vaporizer and breathe in the moisture for a few minutes. You can also try going into your bathroom, shutting the door, and turning the shower on hot for a while. Breathing in the steam from the hot water may relieve your symptoms.

Take OTC Medications

Some OTC medications, including pain relievers, antihistamines and decongestants, can relieve flu symptoms. Always use the recommended dose and don’t take multiple medications at the same time.

While you may not be able to avoid the flu forever, you can help your body fight it. Follow these helpful tips to recover more quickly from the flu and other illnesses.
